TMK

For the uninitiated, Tees Mar Khan is a term used to denote a person who hits the bulls eye all the three times. in symbolic terms it means a person who never fails to achieve the target. But neither are we discussing the movie here nor describing the term; for I have a different expansion for TMK altogether. Too Much Knowledge: that is what i interpret of it.
For many, having knowledge and information mean one and the same. however there lies a thin line of difference. Information is what we receive from all the sources available. Every day a new piece of information on every topic pops up. Knowledge is what we perceive from the given information. Having knowledge implies how much is a person apt in his given field of study. A knowledgeable person knows what is required and what is not. And that is why having knowledge is more important than having info.
But sometimes this Knowledge gets too much on us. It weighs down on your shoulders and sometimes makes you feel that is it worth carrying so much of know-how. When you can't utilize or put to use the knowledge you have then it feels that the hardwork has gone waste. Well guess what, knowledge never goes waste. One may or may not use an info but having Knowledge surely rewards you in the long-run more than just having information. Because Life is not GK quiz where you need to have all sorts of information; it is more of conceptual test where in depth knowledge is required!

Paralysed

Oh no! this is not about what you all might be thinking. We aren't going to discuss here about the medical term nor give out the dos and donts' on the event of the occurrence of one. That is best left to medical experts and I better not meddle with it. This paralysis is very rare in its occurrence and has its origin within the human society very recently. When this occurs, your world turns upside down or downside up, whichever is worse.
When a person losses his/her mobile, all hell breaks loose. Things go awry, your mind doesn't stay under control, panic dwells in, nightmares pay visits, social life gets disrupted, etc. In extreme situations one losses sense of what's happening around him, fingers go numb without the SMS practice, ears don't pick up sounds easily without the presence of caller tunes; all these symptoms can be attributed to Social Paralysis. With the advent of mobile phones, life has become accustomed to staying connected, being updated, knowing whereabouts of someone, keeping in touch, sending smileys, and many other things which we never imagined we would be doing before. But was life really a drag before all this came along? Weren't we leading a joyous life? Weren't we in close relations with the ones we cared?
The answer to all this and many such type of questions is obvious but it is also obvious that we can't do without that handset. The only thing that isn't obvious is the future of our social life- we don't know whether smileys would take over our conversations; we don't know how we would exchange pleasantries; we don't know where technology will lead us; we don't know.

Clash of Umbrellas

On a given day of monsoon, when the clouds are at their dullest best, it pours like this is going to be the ultimate rain. In a given city near the tropics, the clouds treat it with favoritism and stay back a little longer.
Living in Mumbai, one cannot ignore the monsoons. Its like an integral part which one needs to accept and carry one with daily routine work as if it's normal until you feel water up to your knees. No wonder then umbrellas come handy for this entire episode. Usually the regular black, they dot the city space the only thing one can see is a sea of umbrellas; wave after wave splashing on the streets. But for the person below it, he/she requires skillful tactics to maneuver the umbrella without being carried by the current of another one overpowering it. It feels like each one's umbrella is clashing with others in a bid to hold up its space: just like how we as persons clash. When people clash, neither would lose their stand and hold others at fault. Same is with our umbrellas-when they clash, none would like to lose its space. So even if our personage isn't clashing, sometimes its our umbrella.

Spillover Effects

Standard economics has taught us that there are externalities to every process of production for that matter the process of economic development itself. These are either positive or negative and has its impact on the community. In common language these economic externalities are referred to as Spillover effects. These spillovers are not visible as happening but have their effects. most common ones are pollution caused by production, development caused by infrastructure, etc.
What we are talking about here is very much visible and we can foresee the destruction that these spillovers will cause. First it was the BP oil spill from their offshore rig in the Gulf of Mexico which went to became the largest oil spill in U.S history surpassing that of Exon Valdez. All the money extracted from British Petroleum is only a short term remedy for this disaster. the effects of this spillover will continue till the time when BP may not even exist! To top it all, Tony Hayward, in his clear intention to wash of these grease of his hands will get an obese paycheck of around USD 18.5 million when he steps down after closing this leakage.
Closer home, a head-on collision near the Mumbai port caused oil to leak out from a cargo vessel. As if the existing waste and garbage floating on the coastline was not enough, we have oil to give company. All such spillovers have both immediate and long-term impact on the society and bio-diversity. It said that there is no point crying over spilled milk but here we have evry reason to be worried about spilled oil.

Football for Food

When hunger strikes at your stomach from the penalty box, when the surroundings can't defend your upbringing, when poverty shows up the Red card whenever there are many mouths to feed, when filth, garbage, neglect and apathy are your loyal fans, then you have to play this game under the coaching of conscience.
Kids find their freedom, forget their shabby environment, their lack of opportunities when they feed on football. From regions of blood diamond mining to refugee camps in sub-Saharan countries, football is the anecdote for their hunger. When childhood liberates itself and sets its innocence free to run on the field and feet begin to smile with joy; it only happens with football. The whole world may be glued to the oncoming global event, but lurking away in some corner, some kids will be creating their own world of emotions connected with this game. What else do you need except two pairs of feet, any visible marking for goal posts and that food (football)?

Bikini Movies

For a while now, there has been a new genre of movies being produced and marketed in Bollywood industry characterized by magnanimous locations where somehow or the other the lead actress gets a chance to flaunt her toned body in a sultry bikini while the actor is also not far behind in his chiseled torso. these movies have their romantic scenes set on exotic beaches (how then will you sport a bikini) while the rest of the plot be dammed.
very well packaged, nicely marketed, injected with high-adrenaline these are the new Bikini Movies courtesy the good old bikini. It is not about the the heroine with a superb bod anymore, it's about the movie itself being well toned to be able to fit in a bikini frame of mind. Viewers need to go, sit and strip of all their mental clothing and leave it in their bikini intellect for the movie to fit in. I'm not saying that the movie is bad, what I mean is that we need to shed inhibitions and bare our minds to minimal intellectual clothing when one goes to see these Bikini MOVIES.

Nirvana in a Salon

Gautama Buddha attained Nirvana at Bodh Gaya and transformed himself from a Kshatriya prince to an humble being with the knowledge about the spiritual world and hence detaching himself from the physical world and it's associated network of pathos and emotions. He surpassed all levels of material attractions; became an idol of worship to millions and preached the doctrine upon which to base our lives.
But this is not about him or his philosophy, this is about how we can attain Nirvana ( even for an hour or so). If you have the luck of having a low-cost hair-cutting salon in your neighborhood, only then you can experience it. Sit back on that chair while the scissors role into action, the comb grazes on your hair while you keep your eyes closed and go point blank. Feel that time of rejuvenation, it's nothing less than being elevated to another dimension. When those skillful hands do the magic massage, it becomes the climax moment. Shaken and stirred, open your eyes to a new awakening; and that's the new recipe for Nirvana!

Carbide Anyone?

The first batch of those rich colored, straw laden and ripe looking mangoes catch the sight of many in the market. You can't resist the temptation to have one (if you do, then something is hormonally wrong with you). Well, well, those early birds were actually carbide fed to fly of to the markets. Some of us might have taken in some carbide along with those mangoes by now.

So, those mangoes, who fetch a high price initially due to sudden burst in demand have to be ripened artificially and faster by using that doze of fertiliser otherwise how would it retain it's dominance? Similarly, when we enter the market to sell ourselves, the faster we do, the more demand we create and the higher price we are paid for it. Now to do it fast, we also need some form of carbide to enhance our value and be ahead of others. That carbide can be many things depending on us. Those who ripen slowly and enter later fetch a nominal price just to cover up costs.
I'm guessing that none want to be left behind; so anyone for carbide?

Clean your Gutter

Have you noticed the pre-monsoon preparations going on along the streets? What I mean is the cleaning up of the drains along the roads; cleaning them of filth, dirt, garbage all mixed together in a combo pack. This dark scum is scavenged from the drains below the surface and brought to daylight. It this them left to dry and decompose until the garbage van comes to collect it.
Similarly, it is also the time we clean up our inner drains before the rains wet our soul. Otherwise, all the pure water will be clogged, not able to seep through and wash us. The garbage of ethics, behavior, character and culture that has accumulated inside due to the unhealthy food intake need to be cleared. the scum maybe darker than you can think of, but there's nothing to be afraid of going underground.
After all, everything is our own making.

How to kill Boredom

Three alternative and innovative ways to bring boredom to death -
1. Create tension- with the results on its way, this could offer an easy weapon of mass destruction of boredom. Spread hysteria around regarding the results and release panic gas in the air.Idle minds would be definitely stirred and put to action.

2. Flirt around- the summer can effectively become your net practice session for the tournament later on. Go ahead and hone your skills provided you have players to cooperate. So sweat it out, if you have to score!

3. Day rest- Yes that's right! Rest during the day when the sun is working out above and with onset of dusk, leave your nests and roam about. Make the most of the evenings and put your night into motion. All in all, reverse your life-cycle and ride it backwards!

Martyrs' Chowk

Till now I have failed to fully know the expanse Hutatma Chowk. Every day my journey stops somewhere around that Chowk and starts from there as I'm heading home. In fact, people are more familiar in pointing out Flora Fountain and recognize the area better with that Victorian structure. Tourists look for the latter's picture and profile in their travelogues.
Had it not been for this May Day, Hutatma Chowk might have become obsolete from local history.
It was in 1960, when Saurashtra segregated into the present two economic giants Gujurat and Maharashtra, erstwhile known as the State of Bombay. It was a this Chowk where some thousand protest demonstrators died from police firings. Their demand was the creation of a separate state of Bombay and so here we are after 50 years and I'm writing this blog.
Martyrs' Chowk was the symbol of this creation. There have been and will be many protests regarding many demands in due course of time, but the underlying truth is- Some Die so that others Live.

Missing Misal

In the war against vada pav and bhaji pav, misal pav seems to have lost it's significance.
Agreed the former two are the stalwarts of roadside food stalls and nobody comes close to vada pav in beating a mumbaiker's hunger, but still misal should get it's due. Being the sister concern of Bhaji pav, she has been feeding the daily commuter's belly since there are local trains( a bit exageration).
Combining of curry, pulses, farsan, onion and coriander, it is a kind of mix 'n' match quick dish.
Since it does not have as a sophisticated look like Bhaji pav, Misal has been symbolised with the lower class hunger. But it has come of age and misal; the age-old soul blender, deserves a rightful mention with PAV!

Man is by birth good in nature- Rousseau
Maybe this has found significance in today's society. In nature, man is pure, unadulterated. As he gets into civilization, receives formal education acquires knowledge, he becomes a Civilized Brute. Society teaches the things which are not good, which are unsocial, and in a way man gets eager to use his knowledge to know what's not good, the bad stuff and eventually starts adopting it.
Finally, there stands in front of you a person who is capable of doing the most unimaginable negative things which stand in dark contrast to natural morality.
